Arriving at Marty Weber's house, I was greeted by her two dogs, the smell of food cooking, and a table full of her family history just waiting to be told.

The kitchen was buzzing with food sizzling in the pots and pans, as well as in the oven. Cucumber salad is one of Marty's personal favorite dishes to put together when she wants to eat something refreshing. 6 medium-sized cucumbers 3 medium-sized tomatoes cut in half or to taste 4 tbls. minced scallions 3 tbls. dill (optional) 3 tbls. wine vinegar 4 tbls. olive oil 2 tsp. salt pepper to taste Mix all ingredients together and use paprika to decorate.

Nokedli requires a nokedli maker, which can be purchased online. 3 cups flour 1 cup of cold water 2 eggs 1/2 tsp. salt 3 quarts water (to boil nokedli in) 1 1/2 tsp. salt (in water) 2 tbls. butter to taste Mix four, cold water, eggs, and salt together to make the dough. Put the 3 quarts of water in a pot with the salt and bring to a boil, add the dough through the nokedli maker. Cook until dough rises to the top of the water. Enjoy.

Nokedli is a simple and delicious dish to put together fast. With just flour, eggs, water and a few spices, which paprika can be one of them, nokedli is a traditional favorite that Weber learned to make while growing up in a Hungarian culture.

Before I tried some traditional Hungarian food, it was interesting to learn the background for the dishes she was cooking. Her mother always cooked and shared with her what to make and how to make it the Hungarian way.

After a long day of cooking, the sink begins to pile up with dishes that will later be put in the dishwasher. The nokedli, which was coated in olive oil butter; bread; and cucumber salad made a filling and scrumptious meal. They were flavors American's don't have the pleasure of experiencing.

Weber has retired from teaching and her husband is a pilot. When he is not up in the air, she told him to find a hobby. He now owns three drones that he flies around in their backyard when the weather permits.

Weber calls this her Hungarian corner. Dolls and small glass items are in a separate room and in their own cabinet. Each item has some significance, and a number of the items were gifts given to her. She cherishes them all, especially the glass container her husband gave her.

This is a collection of images that captures her family's backyard vineyard in at her childhood home in Indiana, as well as a cherished photo of her and her brother, who is deceased. These photos also remind her of the Hungarian card games that her father used to play with his Hungarian friends.

Coming over to the States, her mother first arrived in New York City as so many immigrants did. She was greeted by the Statue of Liberty. She then traveled to northern Indiana to connect with her family and then begin her own family. South Bend, Indiana, has the largest concentration of people of Hungarian descent in the U.S.

History is a very important aspect in Weber's life. After her father passed away, her mother moved in with one of her twin sisters. When her mom was packing to move, she discovered photos and documents that she hadn't seen in years.

Her mother saved all of her papers when she came over to the States. She has her passport, a paper explaining that she had worked for at least a year in Hungary, and a medical paper showing that she had her medical checkups while in Hungary.

Her mother had to work for a year and had to have a sponsor in order to come to the States. Weber's mother's parents were already in the States and were her sponsors. Her mother's father was in a war camp during World War II and later found his parents, her great-grandparents, in Germany.

The Hungarian Rhapsody Santa is a special Christmas decoration in Weber's home and plays a traditional Hungarian instrument called a cimbalom.

Polinka, is a Hungarian alcoholic drink that is a favorite in Hungary. Weber personally cannot drink it, but her sisters drink it as if it tastes like juice.

Before Weber would let me leave, she insisted on sending cucumber salad, nokedli, and traditional Hungarian bread home with me. Along with those dishes, she included a meat dish for me to take back to friends who are not vegetarian as I am.
